Reception[edit]

Critical response[edit]

Roger Greenspun of The New York Times wrote in his review: 'Clay Pigeon also makes no sense. But its directors, Tom Stern and Lane Slate, have a certain willingness to take each moment as it comes, and its absurdities more often seem the products of a super-active exuberance than of a failed imagination. In its particular field—sex and violence—'Clay Pigeon' just falls short of being very good.'[10]

Release[edit]

Clay Pigeon was released in theatres in August 1971. The film was released on DVD on April 27, 1999 and later on July 6, 2010 by PolyGram Filmed Entertainment.[11]

CLAY PIGEON
dvd

(aka Trip to Kill)

(1971)

DIRECTOR: Lane Slate, Tom Stern
STARS: Tom Stern (Angels From Hell), Telly Savalas (Redneck), Robert Vaughn, John Marley, Burgess Meredith, Ivan Dixon, Jeff Corey, Marlene Clarke, Peter Lawford
SYNOPSIS: A Viet Nam vet turned hippie goes up against corrupt government agents and a ruthless drug lord. Tom Stern is the vet who is happy to drop out of society, get high and cash in on that free love. But grinning DEA agent Telly Savalas has other plans. He tricks Stern into helping him bring down an elusive criminal (a very quirky Robert Vaughn). Stern also directed this hit and miss exploitation that made little impact on the box office in 1971. A great dune buggy chase, early 70's Hollywood locales, some nudity (courtesy of Marlene Clarke) and a bloody shoot-out finale that takes place in the famous Hollywood Bowl moves the plot along.

NOTE: onscreen title is 'Trip to Kill'
